We are always accepting applications for the below positions on an on-going basis within the Sunset Community located along the Northumberland Strait in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, serving adults with developmental, physical, behavioural, psychological and/or psychiatric challenges.

  • Our minimum requirements to become an employee of The Sunset Community, is a Criminal Record Check and/or Vulnerable Sector Check (issued within the last six months), and proof of your grade twelve education (or equivalent). All necessary training for the positions listed below (with the exception of the Staff Nurse/Supervisor’s LPN education) is paid for and provided by The Sunset Community

Positions we Offer:

  • Residential Counsellors (RC)
    • Offering Casual employment with opportunity to access internal position postings
    • RCs are responsible for:
      • Creating and sustaining a normalized living environment that facilitates and encourages independent behaviours and social interactions.
      • Participating in the creation and implementation of client care plans, and providing personal care or support and encouragement to supplement the efforts of the clients’ ability to contribute to their own personal care needs.
      • Encouraging and supporting each individual clients’ age-appropriate and culturally-appropriate self-expression and appearance.
      • Contributing to a safe living and working environment by: a) recognizing and reporting hazardous or unsafe conditions or situations; b) safe and efficient storage of all cleaning agents & medications; and c) keeping traffic and living areas clear of obstacles, spills, and other potential hazards to safety.
      • Other related tasks/duties that may be assigned by the Manager (Client Services) or Staff Nurse/Supervisor.
    • Starting wages are $18.96 per hour with applicable shift premiums of $2.25/hr. (nights, weekend days) that is cumulative (weekend nights $4.50/hr.).
    • Requires a valid driver’s license (not a learners)
    • Shifts are typically 12 hours (0700-1900 and 1900-0700), but a handful 8-hour and 10-hour shifts may be available.
    • This position is part of a bargaining unit (CUPE Local 972) from date of hire.
    • Pension (NSHEPP) and Benefits (HANS) are available/compulsory for those who enter eligible positions.

 

  • Support Service Workers
    • Offering Casual employment with opportunity to access internal position postings.
    • Support Service Workers are called in to fill vacancies in either Dietary or Housekeeping departments, and responsibilities differ depending on which department they’re working in:
      • Housekeeping Department:
        • Cleaning washrooms, tub rooms, day rooms, hallways, and common areas on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
        • Using chemicals to clean surfaces
        • Buffing/Waxing of floors
        • Doing Laundry for clients in the building
        • Supporting Client workers in housekeeping duties
      • Dietary Department:
        • Operating dishwasher to wash dishes from meals, and sanitizing all dishes and work areas
        • Hand washing large equipment (pots, pans, knives, etc.)
        • Food Preparation (peel, cut, prepare vegetables for cook) including food prep for people with allergies and/or intolerances, and preparing desserts for each meal.
        • Cleaning kitchen equipment and areas, including removing garbage and compost.
        • Receive and put away orders
      • Other related tasks/duties that may be assigned by the Manager (Support Services) or Staff Nurse/Supervisor
    • Starting wages are $16.69 per hour with applicable shift premiums of $2.25/hr. (weekends)
    • Shifts are typically 8-hours for Housekeeping and 12-hours for Dietary
    • This position is part of a bargaining unit (CUPE Local 972) from date of hire.
    • Pension (NSHEPP) and Benefits (HANS) are available/compulsory for those who enter eligible positions.

 

  • Staff Nurse / Supervisors (LPN)
    • Offering Full-Time (temporary) employment (up to 18 months, with potential to extend).
    • Must have or be willing to obtain applicable licensure requirements for Practical Nurses in Nova Scotia.
    • Responsibilities for this position include:
      • Supervision, mentorship, and delegation of tasks and functions to Residential Counsellors as well as other departments after-hours.
      • Comply with all NSCN practice standards, policies and legislative requirements.
      • Practice to full scope of the role including medication administration, physical assessment, and client care procedures.
      • Participate in provision of client care planning, implementation and evaluation of holistic care.
      • As an LPN within our team, you will be integral in creating a positive, person-centered, and pleasant environment by working collaboratively and respectfully with all care partners, including clients, co-workers, families, physicians, and community and professional agencies.
      • Other related tasks/duties that may be assigned by the Manager (Health Services), Health Team Lead, or Director (Health & Holistic Services).
    • Required qualifications for this position include:
      • Licensed as a Practical Nurse in the province of Nova Scotia (or willing to obtain License),
      • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills,
      • Self-directed work ethic, with the ability to work independently,
      • High attention to detail, and demonstrated effective use of problem-solving and decision making skills.
      • Ability to organize, plan, and coordinate multiple activities
      • Ability to thrive in an exceptionally fast-paced environment.
    • The Sunset Community pays all Nurses at the top of the Provincial LPN Scale, and provides a $2000 salary increase placing you above the Provincial rates.
    • Shifts are typically 12-hours (0700-1900 and 1900-0700), though occasional 8-hour shifts may be required for organizational purposes.
    • This position is not part of a bargaining unit.
    • Pension (NSHEPP, 17.04% combined) and Benefits are compulsory for this position (Dental and Group Life are compulsory, with Health and other add-ons such as AD&D or Critical Illness being optional).
