What is supported employment?

What is supported employment?

Supported employment helps connect employers and job seekers for fair and flexible jobs. The program is based on the belief that anyone who wants a job can get one with the right support.

It helps job seekers explore their career goals and assists employers in creating inclusive hiring practices and work environments. With the right resources, job seekers can meet the needs of local businesses, and inclusive practices benefit all employees and their workplaces.

Thriving in Community Employment and Beyond

Thriving in Community Employment and Beyond

Mike is a valued member of our community-supported employment program and is currently employed at Cross Roads Cycle. There, he plays an important role by inputting parts into their inventory for sale. Working two days per week, Mike has shown dedication and skill in his role, and this December, he will proudly celebrate one year of employment at Cross Roads.

In addition to his work, Mike is always eager to expand his knowledge. He recently completed a course through Saint Mary’s University, showcasing his commitment to lifelong learning. Beyond his professional and academic achievements, Mike is also a talented visual artist, bringing creativity and passion to everything he does.

We’re proud to support Mike as he continues to grow and succeed in all areas of his life.

What is a job coach?

What is a job coach?

At Sunset, our Community Employment Coordinator (Job Coach) supports job seekers through the various stages of seeking and maintaining employment. Job coaches assist with filling out paperwork, creating resumes and cover letters, getting necessary training, and learning new job skills.

Once employed, the job coach helps with workplace accommodations and supports employees with communication or conflict issues. They also organize regular check-ins with the employee and employer to celebrate successes and address any problems early on.

Onsite Opportunities

We offer jobs in various areas like laundry services, thrift stores, and a woodworking shop. These roles provide a relaxed environment where participants can develop social and job-readiness skills. Working in these areas helps them grow personally and gain the confidence and skills to find other jobs if they choose to pursue them.
