Community Engagement Session

The Sunset Community welcomes the Remedy and the positive opportunities that the transition to a community and choice-based model will provide for the people we support.

For nearly 130 years, we have proudly served Pugwash and the surrounding communities, experiencing tremendous openness and support from our partners and neighbors.

As we navigate this transformational change, we are committed to working hand in hand with our community to shape a bright future. In preparation for our community engagement session on February 28th, we are sharing historical context on the why behind the Remedy.  This foundational information will help frame our discussion.  You can find up to date information on the Remedy website – https://www.dsp-transformation.ca/ as well as the link to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, Remedy in Disability Rights Coalition v Province of Nova Scotia website: Remedy in Disability Rights Coalition v Province of Nova Scotia | Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission .

Our time together on February 28th will focus on the path forward—exploring opportunities, sharing ideas, and forming new and continuing partnerships.

Please join us on this journey as we work to ensure the Sunset Community’s continued success and enduring presence in Cumberland County.

Sincerely, Julie Hoeg – CEO, the Sunset Community

Mark Wood

The Coffee Guy

Mark Wood

In August 2022, with a passion for serving fresh coffee and a $500 loan, Mark Wood set out to start his first business. After a day with the owner of Epoch Coffee, to learn the necessary barista skills, he quickly went to work planning his own business. He conducted market research, sourced supplies, and purchased equipment.

Mark is now serving fresh ground coffee four days a week to an average of 24 customers each day. Starting “The Coffee Guy” has allowed Mark to improve many different skill sets such as; customer service, time management, budgeting, branding, daily and weekly cleaning, inventory, data entry, creating posters, and using the PA system for advertising. With many more learning opportunities to come in the future, we are all eager to see how Mark continues to grow along with “The Coffee Guy”.

Edith MacKay

We’re proud to recognize Edith Mackay for her incredible commitment to personal growth, business success, and independence over the past year. From attending Tuesday knitting circle meetings to engaging with MLA candidates before the election, Edith is an active and engaged citizen.

As the owner of Edith’s Creations, she’s had a busy year managing her Facebook page, fulfilling Christmas orders, and reaching a major milestone—completing a 6-week Entrepreneurial Mindset Certificate through Saint Mary’s Access Ability program.

Beyond her business, Edith continues to embrace independence, whether it’s baking, running her business, or dedicating time each week to managing her personal responsibilities. In 2025, she will take another exciting step by moving to Transition Cove, further expanding her opportunities for growth.

Congratulations, Edith—we are so inspired by all that you have accomplished!
