Independent Living Support
The Independent Living Support (ILS) Program at The Sunset Community empowers individuals with disabilities to live with dignity, autonomy, and purpose in the communities they call home. Rooted in the values of person-directed planning, choice, and community inclusion, the ILS program provides tailored supports that reflect each individual’s unique goals and strengths.
The ILS program offers flexible, community-based assistance to help individuals:
- Maintain a home of their own,
- Build daily living skills,
- Engage meaningfully in community life,
- Achieve their personal and employment aspirations.
Each support plan is co-developed with the individual and their circle of support, ensuring services are as responsive and empowering as possible. Support may include help with budgeting, cooking, health appointments, navigating services, social engagement, and building confidence in decision-making.
As The Sunset Community continues to evolve, the ILS program has expanded to support individuals transitioning from traditional residential models into independent living environments, including those moving into Sunrise Landing, our new 40-unit inclusive housing development in Pugwash. This evolution reflects our commitment to inclusive, forward-thinking models of care and community participation.
Our team of skilled, compassionate staff provide consistent support while promoting independence, self-advocacy, and long-term stability. Through strong partnerships, we connect individuals to employment opportunities, social enterprises, and recreational programs that enrich quality of life.
The ILS program is more than a service—it’s a pathway to belonging, empowerment, and real community living.
